Review: Battle Of The Bands (Wii)

Developer - Planet Moon Studios
Publisher - THQ
Available On - Wii

It’s hard to discuss a game like Battle Of The Bands (BOTB) and not compare it to the likes of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, the market dominators in music games both now also available on the Wii. Though after a brief session with BOTB one realises such comparisons are inappropriate, BOTB does not attempt to emulate any form of real life instrument and instead employs a very light hearted approach to some simplistic arcade command timing against re-mixed versions of popular licensed music. E3 2008 - Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars

Next of interest on the E3 2008 line up is Rockstar’s announcement for the Nintendo DS - Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars (GTA CW).

After the mild success of GTA Advance, and the obvious triumph of the latest Grand Theft Auto IV, GTA CW is another welcome addition to the handheld library of GTA games.

Rockstar Leeds is on development - the smaller development company owned by Rockstar Games who focus on portable titles and other outliers such as Table Tennis for Wii. The PSP GTA games have been very competent and impressive so far with minor frame rate issues the only significant hindrance in porting the intense GTA experience to a technically inferior console. E3 2008 - Final Fantasy 360

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) underway yet again at the Los Angeles Convention Center the usual flurry of news and goss is coming at us left right and center.

I can’t begin to contain the buzz around the industries biggest (yet now significantly smaller) gaming convention, with key notes already held by the big three, Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

One of the first and biggest announcements to surface from the event is Microsoft’s unveiling of Final Fantasy XII for XBOX 360. This is big news for those with the green glow, as past Final Fantasy titles are renown for Sony exclusivity (despite the odd port or spin-off) opening up a huge audience for the partnership between Square-Enix and Microsoft.

Mega Man 9

July 11th, 2008 – 6:08 pm Posted by: Jordan

Recently an interesting title popped up in Australia’s OFLC listing, known as “Mega Man 9″. Many speculations arose to a new installment in the Mega Man (Rockman in Japan) series, a name well known for mass abuse and excessive exposure throughout the years buy the productive yet cash-hungry CAPCOM. It’s also been many years since a significant installment in the Mega Man series, the last few years hosting releases of many spin-off and alternate titles with as many random letters and numbers as you can chuck in a title.

Well, speculations have ceased and fan boys have perked, as CAPCOM have unleashed an amazing trailer for the new yet old-school Mega Man 9. While Mega Man 9 is indeed an entirely new 2008 adventure, it’s sure not going to look it. Returning to the original model of Mega Man, this 9th installment will look, sound, and feel entirely like an original NES title of old.

An ambitious and damn worthy move by CAPCOM in my opinion. What better way to stick it to the current generation of fancy-pants gamers with their high res textures than with an old school Mega Man?

I hope this pays off big time for CAPCOM, as I’d love to see more classic series like this remade in their faithful traditional style.

Scheduled for release later this year, Mega Man 9 will be coming to XBOX 360, Playstation 3 and the Wii all via their respective online distribution services. Shouldn’t cost too much either.

Max Payne trailer

Max Payne was a video game that brought intense story, characters and emotion to action games and from the looks of the new trailer it might also be the first game based movie to not suck. With some awesome style, Mark Wahlberg putting on his most gravely voice and some awesome looking inner-demon hallucinations, I’m not going to miss Max Payne.

Fallout 3 Refused Classification In Australia

Nothing but the hard facts on this one, Fallout 3 has been officially refused classification in Australia.

Now listed on the OFLC’s Classification Database, the original rumors from a Gamespot forum member have indeed come true.

Specifics as to the banning are yet unknown but this is certainly another huge hit to the Australian gaming community and the country that brings you Space-Meat. Gamers of Australia have been fighting for an R18+ classification introduction for some time now to no avail.

Fallout 3 is now one of many titles refused classification and therefore banned in Australia. The recent Dark Sector case is another example, though hopefully Bethesda and Red Ant will act in a similar manner and eventually edit Fallout 3 for release on our neglected shores.

Fallout 3 is the long awaited sequel to an iconic series of post-apocalyptic RPG’s and is set to be one of the biggest and most anticipated releases of the year.

You’ll have to let me know what it’s like.

UPDATE : Seems Yug of Australian Gamer got a hold of the final report issued on Fallout 3 by the OFLC. Check it out here.

Actually we do have a very interesting interview with Matt and Yug from Australian Gamer in which they talk about their levels of geeky-ness, video games and their perfect Sunday. But to get to that you’ll first have to sit through Kyle, Liam and Will blathering on about the flaws and failings of Grand Theft Auto IV and Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

You can download the podcast at the Canned Geek website.

Review: DragonBall Z Burst Limit (XBOX 360)

Available On - XBOX 360, PS3

With Dragon Ball first airing throughout Japan in 1986 it’s not surprising to find a slew of video game releases throughout the years based on one of the most popular manga and anime series ever. DragonBall Z (DBZ) games, more specifically, have been pumping out on a regular basis since the SEGA Mega Drive days. Now we have Burst Limit, DBZ’s first foray into the next-gen realm of HD graphics and online play in what feels like a continuation on the old series as well as an introduction to a new era of DBZ games.

If you’ve played DBZ titles from series such as Budokai or Tenkaichi, you’ll of course be quite familiar with the play style of Burst Limit. A mix of strength and speed, the variety of projectile and melee attack combinations across each character hosts good versatility in combat necessitating fast reaction times against contextual thinking.
